Doing Pizza on a gas grill

For those times when it is too hot to fire up the oven in the house or if you have a power failure or just for the heck of it. You can do Pizza on the grill

Problem

You want to do up a frozen pizza but your air conditioning is struggling and you don’t want to use your house oven. Or perhaps there is a power outage and your electric oven is useless. It could also be that you just feel like doing something different

Pizza on the grill

I’ve had good results doing a frozen pizza on a gas grill. My grills both have covers and a fairly reliable temperature gauge.

Check the directions for time and temperature. Gas grills are usually not as accurate as household ovens so you will need to watch closely.

Preheat the grill to the desired temperature. In this case 400 degrees. Once it gets to 400, turn off the inner two burners and possibly turn down the outer two. The idea is to do a bit of indirect heat instead of direct heat.

A built in grill thermometer is almost mandatory

Plop the frozen pizza on the grill. Close the lid. Keep an eye on the temperature. Adjust the outer burners as necessary. Check it about 3/4 of the way through the process. You don’t want to charcoal it.

Put the pizza right on the grill In this case the two center burners are OFF and the outer 2 are turned down.

Have something like a baking pan to slip under it to remove it from the grill.

Results

I’ve tried thin and thick crust as well as self rising. As long as you keep an eye on it, the results have been great.
