Can you spot the widow maker?

Take a look at this photo. Can you spot the widow maker?

What is a widowmaker?

A widow maker is a large branch high in a tree that is broken, usually where it meets the trunk, and is hanging by a portion of it’s original structure.

The danger is that they can come down virtually at any time. A small gust of wind or cutting limbs off could cause it to break loose. Wood can be surprisingly heavy. When it is falling from 30 feet or more, it can be deadly.

Be vigilant

If you are around tall trees, you should make a habit of looking for widow makers, especially if you are going to be in the area for a while such as attending a picnic.

I tend to stay out of my woods on windy days. There is plenty of other work to do around the house.

Look at the photo below. Once you know what to look for, the widow maker is evident.

Look for the branch in the center that runs vertically. That branch was literally hanging on by a small handful of wood fibers. A small line and a slight tug with my lawn tractor brought it down.

That branch was about 3 inches in diameter at it’s base. I don’t know if getting hit with that would be fatal but it would at least cause a serious injury.

Summary

The average person does not tend to look up. People who are around trees or those in the military might be more apt to check above them. Make it a habit to check the branches above you. It could save your life.
